You probably use social media regularly, and in Japan, LINE is the most popular platform, followed by YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram. But have you ever used social media to communicate with a wider audience? Fewer people tend to post publicly to strangers, while many limit their communication to specific people or groups on LINE and primarily consume content rather than create it.

Sending messages to unknown individuals can feel intimidating if you’re not used to it. Despite this, I believe it’s essential to make an effort to share on social media as much as possible. I often hear concerns like, “Posting on social media is risky,” or “I have nothing to share.” And yes, sharing publicly can lead to negative comments.

However, I still believe we should make an effort to share on social media. Why? Because it allows us to establish our presence as individuals. Without sharing, our social connections remain mostly limited to school friends, work colleagues, and neighbors, as it has been traditionally. This was fine in the past when one could rely on a lifelong career and financial security. But times are changing, and the likelihood of staying in one job for years is decreasing, as AI gradually replaces traditional roles.

In this era, we need skills for working independently, without reliance on a single company. Social media can play a vital role here. It helps individuals gain visibility and connect with others. By sharing what we’re capable of, our ideas, and values, we create opportunities to build connections that could lead to new business ventures.

Some may think, “I have no interest, so this doesn’t apply to me.” However, considering the current trends of diminishing job security and an uncertain future for pensions, using social media to share our skills and perspectives may be one of the best ways to cultivate financial independence.
